Ohio police officer who stuffed snow into man’s mouth throughout arrest quits

A police officer has resigned after he was filmed stuffing snow into the mouth of a suspect as he arrested him.

Physique cam footage reveals Charles Hicks II crying for assist as John Turnure forces snow into his mouth whereas restraining him in Akron, Ohio.

Hicks, who’s black, shouts “I can not breathe sir, I can not breathe”, echoing the phrases of George Floyd who died after police officer Derek Chauvin positioned his knee on his neck in Minneapolis.

Akron Police Chief Mike Caprez introduced on Thursday that Turnure, who’s white, had resigned on 30 March.

He stated it was for “numerous private {and professional} causes”, and it was not an admission of wrongdoing.

With an inside investigation nonetheless ongoing, Mr Caprez stated: “Up till the time snow was used, it was textbook… we did all the pieces proper as much as that time.”

Akron’s mayor Daniel Horrigan stated: “We disrespected a citizen and for that I apologise.”

The video footage reveals Hicks, 26, shirtless and outdoors his residence on 7 February.

His girlfriend had known as the police claiming she was involved for her security after he threatened her with a knife and talked about a gun.

Hicks resists officers’ makes an attempt to handcuff him and is compelled to the bottom.

He groans as Turnure shoves snow into his mouth and is stood again up once more when he claims he cannot breathe.

Hicks advised the Akron Beacon Journal on Wednesday: “It was one of many scariest moments of my life.”

His lawyer, Eddie Sipplen, stated Hicks needs the officer to face felony expenses.

Hicks was charged with home violence and resisting arrest. He’s due in courtroom later this month.
